The Washington State
Department of Transportation (WSDOT) needed
agreement between its regional offices on
a communications strategy to take it into
the 21st century. The communications network
was managed differently in each region,
and each region used different technologies.
In addition, the department shares equipment
and communications capacity with several
other agencies. There is no single funding
source or point of oversight for the department's
massive communications system.
The Solution:
GHS and IBI
Group set out to provide WSDOT with
an enterprise-wide central communications
plan across its regions, and a GIS-based
central record of its telecommunications
equipment.
The Implementation:
GHS and IBI conducted
numerous interviews to create a coherent
needs assessment for the department. We
also collected existing and planned system
information, in order to build a project
GIS that allowed us to formulate telecommunications
options for the department. The GIS also
allows the department to better manage its
telecommunications system in the future.
The Results:
This project has been
successfully completed.
